Author words:
Devwill was originally released for PC in 2017. It was the first project I approached as a truly “professional” product. This Master System version has been completely reworked, featuring new bosses, redesigned stage layouts, and revised enemies, while following the same overall narrative structure. Whereas the 2017 version was entirely black and white, this 2026 edition takes full advantage of the Master System’s color palette.
The original idea for the game came from reflecting on the inspirations behind classic games such as Castlevania. The developers at Konami drew heavily from horror cinema, especially the films produced by Hammer Film Productions, their classic adaptations of Dracula, Frankenstein, and many other horror stories starring legendary actors such as Bela Lugosi, Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, and others. This influence is evident throughout the game, from the title screen and characters to the enemies and the ending credits.
With that in mind, I decided to “go directly to the source,” seeking inspiration from the works that had inspired the creators of the games that shaped me, taking my own gaming references as a kind of index, pointing back to the influences that came before them. This is an exercise I have long practiced in other artistic disciplines, so why not bring it into game development as well?
Devwill for Master System is certainly a more mature game than the 2017 version, particularly in its pixel art and level design. One thing the original version lacked was a meaningful reference to Brazilian black-and-white horror cinema, which I believe I have now incorporated in a compelling way. The game is now ready to reach players around the world, who can experience it and draw their own conclusions.
